What we look for in our semi-precious stones

  • Color saturation and tone — the dominant value driver across most semi-precious varieties.
  • Cut quality — well-cut stones with proper symmetry and proportions regardless of variety.
  • Clarity standards — vary by stone (beryls prized eye-clean; tourmalines often have visible inclusions accepted).
  • Special varieties — Paraiba tourmaline, tsavorite garnet, mandarin garnet, neon spinel, padparadscha-like sunstones, demantoid garnet.

Common questions about semi-precious stones

What is Paraiba tourmaline?

A rare copper-bearing tourmaline with electric neon blue-green color, first discovered in Paraíba, Brazil in 1989. Mozambique and Nigeria also produce paraiba-type tourmalines. Among the most expensive colored gemstones per carat.

Do you sell matched suites?

Yes — we keep inventory ready for matched suites in aquamarine, tanzanite, morganite, tourmaline, and garnets. Specify the variety, color target, and pieces (e.g., three-stone ring + matching earrings) and we’ll prepare options.

Are semi-precious stones color-treated?

Treatment practices vary by variety. Most aquamarine, blue topaz, tanzanite, and amethyst are routinely heat-treated — disclosed on certificates. Treatment-free options exist for premium pieces.

What’s the difference between rhodolite and pyrope garnet?

Rhodolite is a pyrope-almandine hybrid with a distinctive raspberry/grape color. Pure pyrope is a deeper red, occasionally mistaken for ruby. Both are durable and valuable relative to their accessibility.
